Why The ‘Green Season’ Is The Best Time To Visit Botswana

March’s Green Season is considered by many to be the best possible time to visit Botswana. Here Desert & Deltas Wildlife & Safari Expert Andrew Flatt explains why he thinks it is the ideal time to pay a visit to Africa’s wildlife capital.

Botswana, one of Africa’s most exclusive and untouched safari destinations, is a wildlife haven like few others. The beautiful natural surroundings and the incredible wildlife, coupled with the warm welcomes and friendly people make Botswana the stunning destination it is.
Botwana's wildlife are best seen in the green season
March is a beautiful time of year in Botswana. There are many benefits for travelling to Botswana in March, here are our top 5:

  1. Lush, lush, LUSH greenery! The land shows its appreciation to the sky for the rain by painting the earth an incredible mixture of colours with every tree displaying bright leaves, every flower blooming and every blade of grass shining in the sun. Being towards the end of the wet season in Botswana, everything has had plenty of time to absorb all the water it has received and so the plants are out in full force.

  2. Many species of animals have their young during the greens season due to the abundance of water, food and cover. This means the game viewing is lovely with so much new life and excitement.

  3. The Okavango Delta is a year round attraction. The experience at the lodges in the Delta do not change based on season as these experiences are based around exploring and understanding this incredibly beautiful and complex water system. All activities are conducted the same so the only difference is the stunning contrast in the scenery.

  4. Botswana is generally quieter during this time of year, as safari goers are usually not travelling. This means, an already exclusive destination, becomes that much more exclusive. Quiet, intimate and personalised experiences are at their peak during this time of year. The price is also significantly lower in March compared to during the peak season. This is, however, by no means a reflection of the experience, but is hugely beneficial to travellers who wish to experience a Botswana safari but are scared off by the peak season prices.

  5. Stormy skies. Botswana storms are notorious for the beautiful colours and scenery they provide on-lookers, best viewed over the river or savanna’s to create a greater ambience. The storms Botswana usually experiences are late afternoon thunder showers that do not generally last long, but put on a beautiful show that is often observed while guests ready for dinner, making for spectacular photographic opportunities. The rains are also welcomed at this time of year, in the heat of the Botswana summer sun, and cools the air very nicely.
