Explore South & West Greenland

Though there are several settlements in this part of Greenland, unpredictable weather and scarcity of docking facilities nevertheless make this a real expedition. Itinerary and exploration opportunities along this coast are therefore heavily dependent on weather and ice conditions.  Places we hope to visit include:

Hvalsey – The site of Greenland’s largest and best-preserved Norse ruins. According to the Icelandic Book of Settlements, the farmstead was established in the late 10th century by Erik the Red’s uncle, Thorkell Farserkur. Most impressive among the remains are the walls of an exceptionally well-built stone church.

Qaqortoq – The most populous town in southern Greenland with colorful historical buildings, such as the former blacksmith shop that now houses the Qaqortoq Museum.

Narsaq – The colonial sealing and trading port of Narsaq was built in an area formerly inhabited by Vikings. Some of Greenland’s oldest Norse ruins are located nearby.

Paamiut – This picturesque town has one of Greenland’s finest churches, built in 1909 from wood in the Norwegian style. The area is also known for an abundance of white-tailed eagles.

Nuuk – The capital and largest city of Greenland, with a population of over 16,000. The famous Qilakitsoq mummies can be seen at the Greenlandic National Museum.

Itilleq – A settlement just north of the Arctic Circle on a small island with about 100 inhabitants - the main trade here is fishing and hunting.

Sisimiut – The second-largest town in Greenland known for adventure sports, especially dog sledding. The Sisimiut Museum offers insight into the local culture and a history of human habitation dating back 4,500 years.

Assaqutaq – This abandoned settlement near Sisimiut is now used as a summer camp by local schools. The old fish factory and a beautiful church are set amidst delightful surroundings.

Ilulissat – This where the Jakobshavn Glacier calves off vast quantities of ice each day into Disko Bay -  truly spectacular sight. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Qeqertarsuaq – On volcanic Disko Island, this is a charming small town with views of the massive icebergs in Disko Bay.

Eqip Sermia – This active tidewater glacier is situated in a wild and scenic fjord. In the period after the Second World War, this area functioned as a starting point for expeditions onto the ice cap conducted by the French explorer Paul Emile Victor, whose hut still stands today.

Uummannaq – Founded in 1763, this is a hunting and fishing base with a canning factory and a marble quarry.
