Other Wildlife

Apart from mammals and birds, Ecuador is rich in reptiles, amphibians and insects. Reptiles cover a wide range from snakes, including the mighty anaconda, caiman, lizards and geckoes to the unique species on the Galapagos islands, land and marine iguanas and giant tortoises. In the forests many species of frogs can also be seen, with their colourful bodies and amazing camouflage.

The rivers, especially those that form part of the Amazon system, teem with fish such as catfish, rays, piranhas and eels and for those keen on extreme fishing, this is a must-visit area.

Entomologists also come to Ecuador for the rich variety of insects to be found within the various ecosystems across the country.

The Galapagos Islands are covered in separate areas of this website and are one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world.
